Deep Lab residency at NEW INC at the New Museum

The third installment of the New Museum’s IDEAS CITY, a bi-annual festival exploring the future of the city through the lens of culture and the arts, will take up the theme of The Invisible City. Addressing questions of transparency and surveillance, citizenship and representation, expression and suppression, participation and dissent, the Festival will shed light on the invisible forces at work in our cities.

To address these topics, NEW INC has invited the cyberfeminist research collective Deep Lab for a weeklong residency, during which the group will continue its work exploring privacy, security, surveillance, anonymity, and large-scale data aggregation in relation to the Invisible City. Working in dialogue with NEW INC’s community of artists, designers, and technologists, as well as members from local community groups like Data & Society, Deep Lab will host conversations, workshops, and performances, as well as develop new installations and participatory experiences that will take place during IDEAS CITY.

The aim of the residency is to introduce these critical issues in technology and society to a wider audience through discourse and public engagement. The research-based portion of the residency will culminate in a series of public-facing performances, workshops, panels, participatory activities, and interactive installations, the first of which will be a Drone Painting Performance on Thursday evening by Deep Lab founder and artist Addie Wagenknecht in collaboration with NEW INC member Dan Moore and Becky Stern of Adafruit.

Panels and workshops will take place throughout the day on Friday, with topics ranging from “Surveillant Anxiety” to “Data & Social Justice,” “Pipelines to Tech Empowerment,” and “How to PGP.” A performance by experimental rock musician EMA will conclude the day’s events, engaging the audience through surreptitious portrait sketches writ large in an immersive projection environment.

Saturday’s street fair will be filled with participatory activities throughout the Bowery neighborhood, such as a Network Infrastructure Walking Tour with Ingrid Burrington, and interactive installations on the ground floor of 231 Bowery.

By the end of the weeklong residency, Deep Lab will produce an open-source toolkit that can be used after IDEAS CITY comes to a close. The goal is to disseminate these ideas, processes, and tactics so that they can be repurposed and employed beyond the scope of the residency and potentially reach a global audience.
